Specialist support tailored to the unique needs of performing artists

In dance, as in life, the mindset you bring to the task at hand greatly influences your success.

(Mikhail Baryshnikov)

Following a career as a professional dancer and qualified ballet teacher, I have a special interest in supporting the work of performing artists. I can assist with a range of issues including working with students attending vocational schools, supporting the transition from student to a professional career, performance anxiety, enhancing intrinsic motivation, eating disorders/body image related concerns, managing career transitions, low self-esteem, abuse or bullying and coping with injuries/incidents which impact career progression. My work as a psychologist has enabled me to offer support to dancers, actors, musicians and musical theatre performers. I see students from Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance on a freelance basis so am familiar with the challenges which students can encounter during training and post graduation.

Seeking support should NEVER be viewed as a sign of weakness or an inability to manage the demands of the profession. In my experience, it can mean quite the opposite. Many performers who have attended therapy describe how this has actually enhanced well-being, progression, ability to manage work related stress and performing ability.

In order to meet the demands of the life as a performing artist, I endeavour to tailor my approach to meet the needs of performers by offering support in a confidential setting away from the workplace/school. I work independently so am not directly affiliated with any schools, companies, orchestras or producers. This fits with what I believe performers need- an opportunity to explore concerns in an informal and safe environment.

I offer short and long-term therapy which can integrate a highly structured and goal orientated format or a less directive approach. I often try to integrate the performers art form into the therapy through tasks which can be completed in between sessions. I frequently use eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) to assist with performance related anxiety and to enhance aspects of performance. I have developed a network of medical professionals, dieticians and physical therapists who I can refer to should you need signposting or advice on how to address a specific situation or life challenge. I am happy to offer advice and signposting to performing artists or parents as an independent service.

Taking the first step to seek support as a performing artist can feel like a challenge. With this in mind, I offer a brief telephone consultation in order that I can answer any questions you might have or explore whether therapy is likely be useful.

Following an initial meeting, which I will endeavour to offer at a reduced rate, it may be appropriate to provide online therapy for performers whilst on tour or in order to make therapy accessible to those on a low income.
